Since its founding in 1984, White Star has become one of the world’s leading publishers of illustrated books. It currently produces over 60 new titles each year in such fields as archaeology, art, nature, photography, ethnology, mountaineering and marine biology. This rapid development is testified by the exponential increase in co-editions, which have now reached 900 and are distributed in over 60 countries, with a sales figure of 6.5 million copies. For ten consecutive years, from 1994 to 2005, the company’s achievement has been publicly recognized through the receipt of the Italian Book Export Award, made by the Prime Minister of the Italian Government. In 2001 White Star began direct distribution of its English-language books in the 60 countries mentioned, extending its scope through subsidiaries in Switzerland, Hungary and Egypt. White Star has also signed an agreement with two major publishing groups – Rizzoli International and Random House – for the distribution and sale of its publications in bookstores, museum bookshops and bookstore chains in North America. The catalogue of English-language titles currently features over 280 books. Finally, the company’s international successes have allowed it to found a new branch: White Star Verlag, which commenced operation in Germany in 2005. In recent years two series in particular have proved exceptionally popular. The first of these is “Cubebooks”, which commenced with The Sea (translated into 20 languages), The Earth and Baby Animals, followed by the equally successful Horses, Cats and Mountains (soon to be joined by The Sky and Dogs). The second is the “Flying High” series, featuring spectacular aerial views, which adds the titles Tuscany and Africa for 2006, following the success of the volumes Egypt, America, Ireland and The World. Other highly acclaimed books include Vanishing Africa, the exciting “travel journal” of a famous reporter in the remotest regions of Black Africa, Pompeii – The History, Life and Art of the Buried City, which was highly acclaimed in the United States and is featured in the catalogue of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Eternal Army, an unprecedently comprehensive monograph that illustrates the mysterious terracotta army of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi. Finally, Italy from Above deserves a special mention. This prestigious volume, presenting a precious collection of aerial views, is also included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2005 catalogue. The publications for 2006 comprise two new series. The first, entitled “Images for One Year” makes its debut with two prestigious titles: ITALY, IMAGES FOR ONE YEAR and EGYPT, IMAGES FOR ONE YEAR, while the second, “Classics of Adventure”, presents the travel accounts of history’s greatest explorers in an updated magazine form: THE DISCOVERY OF TUTANKHAMON’S TOMB, THE MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, SEEKING LIVINGSTONE, THE VOYAGES OF THE BEAGLE and THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCES OF THE NILE. Finally, THE SEA (2005), the highly successful first title of the “Big Cubebook” series, has been followed by THE EARTH. Other new publications for 2006 include: THE LORDS OF THE SAVANNAH, AUSTRALIA – THE NEW FRONTIER, THE TREASURES OF ST. CATHERINE’S MONASTERY, THE ART AND DESIGN OF FOLDING KNIVES and THE TREASURES OF ANGKOR, a new title in the “Art Guides” series.
