The Barber of Seville

The Barber of Seville

by Laura Castellani

Figaro, a barber, is always meddling in other people’s business. He knows everything about everybody. Figaro and his world are brought brilliantly to life in Rossini’s comic opera The Barber of Seville. Count Almaviva is in love with Rosina. Rosina is secretly in love with him, but she thinks he is a student with no money. Every great love story has its impediment, and in this opera the impediment is Don Bartolo.

He is old and devious and happens to be Rosina’s guardian. He would like to marry Rosina himself so that he can take her dowry. Fortunately, Don Bartolo will have trouble achieving his goal. Why? Because there is Figaro! Figaro is determined to help the young lovers and comes up with some clever schemes of his own to help them outwit Don Bartolo.
