The Basics of Classical Dance - Agrippina Vaganova

The Basics of Classical Dance - Agrippina Vaganova

by edited by A. Alberti and F. Pappacena

Agrippina J. Vaganova (1879-1951) was one of the most important figures in Russian ballet and in the world of dance generally. After training with the greatest masters of the 1800s, she restructured the St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) ballet school, creatively fusing the traditional features of French and Danish origins with the virtuosic technique from the Italian school as taught in Russia by Enrico Cecchetti. The result was a fine balance between formal experimentation and solid technique, a characteristic which also distinguished her students (among whom M. Semënova, G. Ulanova, I. Kolpakova, protagonists of the Russian Ballet of the 1900s). Vaganova’s method, presented in a book published in Leningrad in 1934, is still used today as the basis for the teaching of ballet in Russia, and is followed in all the world.
