La Cambiale di Matrimonio

La Cambiale di Matrimonio

by Cristina Marsi

Tobias Mill and his daughter Fanny are the main characters in this comic opera composed by Rossini when he was only eighteen years old. Mill is a rich merchant who secretly wants to marry his daughter to an old American merchant named Slook. The two men decide to seal Fanny’s fate with a marriage contract. Unfortunately for Slook, Fanny is in love with Edward Milford.

Edward is a handsome young man and a family friend. Everything is revealed when Slook arrives in England to draw up the contract. He comes to Mill’s house, where he begins to see that there is more than simple friendship between Fanny and Edward... Rossini’s delightful opera is brought to life through Cristina Marsi’s vivid storytelling and Silvia Crocicchi’s marvelous illustrations.
