Venezia dall’Alto

Venezia dall’Alto
Venice from Above

by Giampaolo Agostinelli and Rosalba Giorcelli

Try to imagine what it would be like to rise higher than St. Mark’s steeple, which stands at almost 300 feet, and soar over Venice and its Lagoon. Venezia dall’Alto=Venice from Above affords such a view in a full-color photography book. Conceived and executed by photographer and aviator Giampaolo Agostinelli and edited and curated by journalist and art specialist Rosalba Giorcelli, this book features 114 color photographs selected from more than 3,000 images archived as part of the Venice from Above project. Each view includes a description and “you are here” map to help guide readers through the breathtaking maze that is Venice.

Giampaolo Agostinelli first experienced these extraordinary views from the skies while free-fall parachuting over San Nicolo del Lido airfield and as a private pilot through his relations with aeronautical authorities and Police Flying Units. Mr. Agostinelli’s photography successfully presents a new “bird’s-eye-view” and narrative of the iconic landmarks and uniquely timeless beauty of Venice and her Lagoon.

Venezia dall’Alto=Venice from Above serves as an important witness to recent, modern developments and urban design in Venice. This book is the first to document from an aerial perspective the fourth and newest bridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Ponte della Costituzione, which spans the Canal Grande linking Piazzale Roma to the railway station. The MOSE construction project, designed to protect the city from flooding during exceptionally high tides, is also documented in an informative two page spread.

Curated by Rosalba Giorcelli, this 2009 bilingual edition (Italian/English) has been translated into English by Patricia Thomas with preface by Luana Zanella, Venice City Councillor for Culture. Editions in additional languages are forthcoming. The book is available in two formats, cloth gift-size and paperback.
