More than 32,000 hours broadcasted in a year, 53,000 hours radio programs, more than 16 millions fee licence, regional sites in all the country, annual income more than 2,500 millions euros, 49% fee licence, 40% income, 11% other revenues, 9986 employers.
Founded in 1924 as Radio broadcasting, in 1954 the company was named RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana. Television broadcasting with the first national channel. In 1961 the second national channel went on air and in 1979 the third channel went on air on a national and regional basis. In 1997 satellite digital television was launched. 2003 was the year of RAI digital terrestrial television.
Structure
Rai owns 3 editorial areas, TV, radio and new media for ideation, development and realization of new programs and radio, television, satellite and digital channels.
The three areas are supported by technical, organizational and commercial structures.
Channels
Rai Uno Leadership and tradition. Entertainment, big sports events, popular feature films and drama are the main genres. Audience share 22.31%
Rai Due Dynamism and innovation Focusing on innovative content, the channel targets a younger audience. Audience share 10.4%
Rai Tre Service and territory. Information, high-quality feature films, documentaries and service programs. Audience share 9.08%
TG1 Leading public service news provider: 12 daily newscasts, specials, magazines and live coverage of special events.
TG2 has reached audience objectives with a modernized style; 5 newscasts on weekdays and 9 over the weekend.
TG3 produces 5 daily newscasts, specials and magazines like “Gt Ragazzi”
TGR offers 3 Television and 1 weekly daily newscasts broadcast regionally (windows) on Rai Tre; information services for German, Slovene, Latin and French speaking minorities.
RadioUno Popular/Focused on information. news, sports and big events. Confirms its leadership in the Italian market, with an average of 7 million listeners daily in 2004.
RadioDue Catching young audience. with an average of more than 4.5 millions listeners daily in 2004.
RadioTre Sophisticated public/fidelity. offers cultural and musical programs, focusing on innovation and quality of language and on the big cinema, music and arts events.
Gr Parlamento News from the Parliament and programs concerning political issues.
Televideo is the main Italian teletext service. Televideo offers a subtitling service for persons with hearing impairments. It is also shown on web www.televideo.rai.it
Free satellite channels
Rai News 24 the all news channel, with round-the-clock updates, available on TV, internet and new media platforms
Rai Educational produces two free-to-air channels: Rai Edu1 (education) and Rai Edu 2 (culture)
Rai Sport the digital free-to-air channel covering sports events and programs related to sports
Rai Internazionale the Italian language and culture abroad
Rai Med the digital bilingual Italian/Arabic channel producted by the joint effort of news channels (TG3, TGR), Rai News 24 and Rai Sat focuses on news and information
Rai Teche (archives) Project is aimed at gathering, cataloguing and enhancing RAI’s huge historical and documentary heritage. In the multimedia catalogue activity for TV and Radio (Octopus system, CMM-Multimedia Catalogue), Rai Teche is a leader in Europe.
Rai group
Rai Trade is the subsidiary that promotes Rai’s audiovisual products and sells the rights internationally. Rai trade also develops publishing projects and co-marketing activies and produces and markets 2 Club Channels (soccer), Roma Channel and Inter Channel Rai Way, fully owned by RAI, manages the distribution of RAI’s signal through the over 2.300 repeaters located over the entire Italian territory.
Rai Cinema is a fully-owned subsidiary of RAI. Since 2000, RAI Cinema has been in charge of TV rights acquisition, production (high-quality feature films and TV drama) and domestic theatrical distribution.
RAI Corporation is the American subsidiary of RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, Italy’s public broadcasting system, established to provide a variety of services to all departments of RAI.
Rai Sat: supplies to SKY multichannels platform 5 pay channels (Extra, Premium, Ragazzi, Gambero Rosso Channel, Cinema World) Rai.it is the portal produced by Rai Net (and Rai News 24 for news contents). Rai Net promotes Rai products on the web. Rai.it is leader in the news and information web sector with around over 2 millions unique users.
Rai Click is a joint venture between Rai (60%) and Fastweb SpA (40%). It distributes audiovisual and multimedia products (TV on demand) for TV and PC through broadband Internet networks. More than 3,500 programs available “video on demand” on TV and over 1,500 programs on Web. |
