Bowling and daisies

by Manuela Giacchetta

Lorenzo is twenty-eight years old, and was left by Elisabetta. He lives a moment of existential impasse, unable even to complete the reading of Ulysses by James Joyce.
He’s a devourer of books, untidy, disillusioned, stuck in a clerical work.
His pessimism, so ironic, not drive him beyond his own virtuous circle. Hangs in the pub in the company of his faithful and greedy friend Cionco.
Everything begins to change when Lorenzo starts receiving strange anonymous poems by an admirer. He will be very surprised to find that it’s Mara Catulli, a tenant of his building that has decided to step forward now that he’s single again.
Lorenzo let himself intrigue by her manner, her sensuality, be afraid to learn that she’s just out of a suicide attempt.
Against every expectation, Lorenzo falls in love with her, but fails to admit it to himself, if not when he meets the charming fifty years old who had an affair with Mara.
In this delicate emotional scene, Elisabetta will be alive again, perhaps regretted her choice.
But Lorenzo ask himself determination, at least once in their life and declare his feelings. Last but not least: even finish the reading of Joyce’s Ulysses.
