LEARNING MATHEMATICS WITH PEER TUTORING

by Cesare Cornoldi Marta Chemello

Metacognitive behaviours and control processes

The volume offers a collection of materials to organize a mathematics learning programme using peer tutoring, a teaching-learning method focused on group activities that allows each student to contribute with their skills and competences.

After a theoretical section on methodology, the book presents a preliminary training in the introduction of peer tutoring to illustrate to the students what it consists of and to strengthen some of their social skills.  It proposes over 120 photocopiable cards for classes from 2nd to 5th grades which peer partners can use to practice specific disciplinary contents. In its various applications, peer tutoring promotes positive and long lasting effects on students’ academic performance, task involvement, emotional and cognitive aspects, classroom behaviour and social skills.

The peer tutoring programme objectives:

  • promote the development of social skills within the class group;

  • foster the learning potential of each pupil;

  • create a learning context that enhances the skills of each pupil;

  • consolidate the knowledge already acquired and acquire new knowledge;

  • stimulate greater motivation to learn.

Cooperative Learning
Cooperative learning is a teaching/learning method focused on group activities, structured according to precise principles, which has demonstrated a formidable effectiveness both in promoting school learning and developing civil coexistence skills, as well as in stimulating different and diverse intelligences and learning styles. It represents a fully adequate response to the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs, since it is based on the principle according to which each member of the group, with their unique and special characteristics, can contribute to everyone’s learning and everyone can become a resource for others.
